Usability and Interaction Design (IxD) are Inseparable

People didn’t realize when and how UX became a giant field in less than a decade’s span. And the ever surprising fact is that it’s increasing like umbrella technology, such as AI, IoT, RPA, big data, and so on.

So, the scope is far wider than you can speculate today? But the question is, what’s driving the growth in this field? With everything going online, shopping to dating – companies have felt the need for fine and better UX, which is critical to their overall success. Loyalty programs, retention plans and even some other ways to hold consumers are now all reliant on user experience. For instance, will you use a digital wallet that does not show up with potential cash back offers, rather makes you go merry round with its rattling and irksome UI? Obviously, you will get rid of it in no time and will probably invest time in finding a perfect alternative to it. ‘Customers not coming back’ is the real worry for all businesses. And this worry is big enough to fuel the growth drive in the UX field.

Does it mean that the UX designer is burdened with business objectives and what if he/she failed? Keeping aside the results, we can firmly state that UX designer field appeals for specialization for various categories like interaction, user research, special UX for VR and AR, prototyping, and so on. If you get to lay out the responsibilities of a UX designer, things get become sticky.

Among all this fog, interaction design plays a vital role in defining the overall success of any digital or non-digital product. How does it work and what are its inherent mechanisms?

Interaction design is relatively a newly-found term, because some years back the Internet was not a thing of common interest. Conversely, today every second person on the earth has access to it and it may go on forever. With the increasing penetration in the Internet technology, the rise in digital products has been inevitable.

Interaction design is that part in the design of the product that mostly facilitates the conversation between a user and a product. This is the moment of acid test for the product and the team that works behind the screen. In simple words, they tolerate each other, and must like each other. Though anyone can buy or download or browse a product (website or app), but it’s the IxD that promotes the usership of a product. Engagement + usability + pleasant experience = IxD! A step far ahead than ownership!

A UX designer is the person who also takes care of IxD (Interaction Design). However, a close look reveals that IxD is not any random brick in the wall; it properly requires planning and undergoes the basic concept of 5 important Ds (dimensions) or aspects: words, visual representation, physical objects/space, time, and behavior. These 5 Ds further define the usability of the product. Without the usability aspect, there will not be any ‘interaction taking’ place in the design of the product. And usability is not just one word for any designer; it involves some rudimentary building blocks within it. Let’s take a brief tour of all, one by one.


This defines control over the product, a user should have sound control over the interface – disturbing elements should have no place there.


Hardly any user goes to the ‘Help’ section of a website or app. They rely on their basic IQ to navigate through the product. Thus, the user should find it easy to explore the product without piling up frustration.


Neither bright nor dull – optimally soothing to eyes. No matter what colour combination goes there, the interface should be visually charming?


Using the basic cognitive psychology, a user should be able to understand the semblance and purpose of the product. No one loves too much brainstorming for getting simple chores done. Can the user understand the product just by seeing it? If yes, then consider a great product has been invented.

After reading the aforementioned points, you can make out that how important is usability for any UX team excited to bring alive a product out in the market.
